How I Vet a Company Before I Put My Name On It (The Rebuild Standard)

After losing everything in 2019, I built a checklist. These are the six questions I ask before I build with any company — and why most companies fail at least one.

Before October 2019, I evaluated companies the way most people in this industry do. I looked at the product. I looked at the comp plan. I listened to the pitch. I trusted people I should not have trusted.

After 2019, I built a different process. I call it the Rebuild Standard. These are the six questions I ask before I put my name on anything.

1. Who owns the company and what are they building toward?

Founders who are building toward an exit will eventually make decisions that prioritize that exit over the field. Founders who are building a mission will make different decisions. I need to understand the motivation behind the company before I trust it with my reputation and my team.

2. Is the company financially clean?

Debt creates pressure. Outside investors create pressure. Both eventually find their way to the field in the form of comp plan adjustments, product changes, or decisions made to serve financial obligations rather than builders. A clean balance sheet is not a nice-to-have. It is a requirement.

3. Do they control their own product?

If the company does not own its manufacturing, it does not control its costs, quality, or supply. Every dependency is a risk that lands on the field eventually. Vertical integration is not a buzzword — it is protection.

4. Have they ever put themselves above the field?

Track record tells you more than any presentation. I research every company's history before I join. How did they handle their last crisis? How did they treat their field when it was inconvenient? What the founders have done before tells you what they will do again.

5. Can I look the founders in the eye?

I fly to see the people before I commit. Not a video call. Not a convention presentation. A real in-person conversation where I can ask the questions that do not have rehearsed answers. If a company's leadership will not give me that access, that tells me something.

6. Will this still exist in 10 years?

If I cannot see a realistic path to this company existing and thriving in 10 years, I am not building on it. Direct sales takes years to compound. I am not interested in rebuilding from zero again.

Vital Health passed all six. That is the reason I am here.
